Grady Lee Mathews, Sr., 75, left this earth to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at his residence. He had been a resident of Tifton since 1975. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2014, in the Sanctuary of Tifton’s First Baptist Church. Rev. Joseph L. Crumley and Dr. Jackie Sammons will officiate. Mr. Mathews will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery. William “Bill” Johnson, Gene Googe, Wayne Matthews, Don Purgason, Harold Abbott, Gene Seigler and Vincent Funk will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the B.O.C.H. Sunday school class and the Adult III Sunday school department of Tifton’s First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 13, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Mr. Mathews was born on July 4, 1938 in Douglas, a younger son of Charles Alfred Mathews and Annie Mae Hursey Mathews, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Charlene Mathews, Delouise Parramore and Ann Collier. He attended Coffee County schools and graduated in 1958. In 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Marie Joyce of the Hebron Community in Coffee County. Grady retired in December 2003. He had worked with Harvey’s Supermarket for almost sixteen years, working as Produce Manager for seven years and as Store Manager for seven years. His last 30 years were spent in General Sales and the Concrete Business, from which he retired in 2003. After retirement, Grady enjoyed fishing daily, sharing his catch with friends and having lots of fish fries. After a year of retirement, he gained part-time employment at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals for approximately 10 years, until health problems forced permanent retirement. Grady’s volunteer work consisted of Hospice of Tiftarea, former member of Rehoboth 1-F Unit of the Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief and the I-75 ministries at Tifton’s First Baptist Church. He enjoyed working in his yard; day lilies were his delight and he shared the bounty of his plants with family, friends and neighbors. He was also a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was a deacon of Southside Baptist Church in Blakely and Northside Baptist Church in Tifton. Grady is survived by his wife of 55 years, Wanda Marie Joyce Mathews of Tifton; his daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Keith Jones of Blairsville; his son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Mona Mathews of Tifton; one brother and sister-in-law, George Franklin and Glenda Mathews of Goose Creek, South Carolina; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marshall and Josephine Joyce of Berrien County. Grady has five grandchildren, Shelley Jones Zeigler and husband, Johnathan Zeigler, Kyle Jones and Jessica Jones, all of Blairsville, and Josh and Leah Lamb of Tifton. He also has two wonderful, great-grandchildren, Kahlilah Zeigler of Blairsville and Ethan Lamb of Ringgold. Survivors also include an aunt, Weta Fales of Hazlehurst and an uncle, Elijah Hursey of Douglas. Nieces and nephews remaining are Sylvia and Roy McWilliams, Ashley and Kristie Vickers, Mike and Pam Collier, all of Tifton, Monica and Mike Keen of Goose Creek, South Carolina and Van and Brenda Mathews of Richmond Hills, Texas. Flowers will be accepted or memorial gifts be made to Mountain Area Christian Academy, 14090 Old Highway 76, Morganton, GA 30560-3464.

Lottie Mae McCall Walker, 82, of Norman Park died Thursday, June 12, 2014, at Tift Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 16, 2014 in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Rev. Terrell Roberts will officiate with burial to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 15, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Mrs. Walker was born on April 18, 1932 in Thomasville and was the daughter of George McCall and Ruby Hunt McCall, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Johnny B. Walker, who died in 1989; two grandchildren, Suzanne Delaney and Jerry Delaney; two step-children, Audrey Adams and Bonnie Lewis; and one brother, Charles Joseph McCall. She was a homemaker and attended Lakeside Assembly of God in Moultrie. She liked to sew and embroider. Jerry William Hobbs, Jr., 55, of Tifton died Sunday, June 15, 2014, at his residence. Mr. Hobbs was born on October 12, 1958 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky and was the son of Jerry William Hobbs, Sr. and Doretha Skaggs Hobbs, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Eddie Kenneth Williams. He graduated from Moultrie Tech and was employed with Werner Enterprises and formerly as a draftsman at Master Craft. He was a member of the Tifton Council #58, the Coastal Plain Commandry #42, a Shriner at the Hasan Temple in Albany, a member of Scottish Rite in Albany, the Tifton Masonic Lodge #47, the Tifton Chapter #47 and the Tift Area Daylight Lodge #745. Mr. Hobbs is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy William and Laura Hobbs of Tifton.

Elmer Mason Price, 88, of Tifton died Thursday, June 26, 2014, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2014, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Dr. Wayne Roe will officiate with burial to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Forum Sunday school class at Tifton’s First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 27, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Mr. Price was born on September 6, 1925 in Quitman and was the son of Julian Mason Price and Ruth Wilson Price, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Roberts Price, who died in 2008; one son, Robert Wilson Price, who died in 2011; one daughter, Lillian Alison Price; and one brother, Julian Edwin Price. He owned and operated Colony Cleaners in Tifton for 58 years. He graduated from the University of Georgia in June of 1949 with a BBA in Finance. While at the University of Georgia, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Phi Kappa. He enjoyed golfing and yard work and was a member of Tifton’s First Baptist Church. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was in the pilot training program. He was also a member of the Exchange Club of Tifton. Mr. Price is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, William Mason and Mary Frances Price of Tifton and Perry Alan Price of Tifton; one sister, Julia Gray of Tifton; and three grandchildren, Terry Daniel Price and his wife Kat Amano, Brian Joseph Price and Perrin Elizabeth Price. Mrs. Hogan was born on April 5, 1962 in Tift County and was the daughter of Martha Sue Leach Jordan of Chula and the late Harold R. Sumner. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Herbert and Louise Sumner and T. E. and Irma Leach. She was an insurance agent with State Farm Insurance Company in Tifton and MetLife. She was an artist and loved to paint. She also loved gardening, decorating, cooking, spending time at the beach shell-hunting. She loved spending time with her family and, most importantly, her devotional time spent with Jesus. In addition to her mother, Mrs. Hogan is survived by her husband, Lamar Hogan of Tifton; her children, Lacey Westberry Franks and husband, Chance and their children, Tyler and Kylie, all of McDonough and Jeremy Westberry and wife, Tammy and their children, William and Maddox, all of Tifton; her step-children, Luke Hogan and wife Rebecca of Tifton and Cassie Hogan and husband, Richard Long of Tifton. Suzanne’s siblings are Scott Sumner and wife, Charlene and their children, Adam and Anna Grace of Charlotte, North Carolina and Sheryl Sumner Parks and husband, Walt and their children, Elizabeth, Ethan and Eli of Cochran.

TIFTON – Kenneth Lee Layfield passed away on July 12, 2014 at his home in Tifton. Visitation will be held at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions be made in memory of Ken and in honor of his grandson, Ryan Clements, to Middle Georgia Down Syndrome Society, P. O. Box 1606, Macon, GA 31202; or Hospice of Tiftarea, P. O. Box 747, Tifton, GA 31793. Ken was born April 1, 1958 in Ocala, Florida to Morris and Velma Lipsey Layfield, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Clinton Layfield and his mother-in-law, Jeanette Eaton. Ken enjoyed fishing and taking his grandchildren for rides on his tractor…which he faithfully washed. Ken served in law enforcement for many years. He was currently office manager at People’s Financial Corporation in Tifton. Mr. Layfield is survived by his wife, Karen Eaton Layfield of Tifton; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and John Clements of Fitzgerald; daughter, Leann Ashworth of Tifton; grandchildren, Jake Clements, Ryan Clements, Alexa Ashworth and Aubree Ashworth; one brother and sister-in-law, Lynn and Jean Layfield of Tifton; and father-in-law, Bo Eaton of Tifton; brothers-in-law and their wives, Richard Eaton of North Carolina, David and Tami Eaton of Tifton, Kenny and Trudy Eaton of Tifton and Bruce Eaton and Kerri Conley of Tifton; and many nieces and nephews. Catherine (Peggy) Lillian Fuller Powell Collins, 82, of Tifton died peacefully July 12, 2014 at Tift Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, she had lived in Tifton, Georgia for the last 25 years. Her mother Catherine Lillian Fuller died when Catherine was 19 days old and she was also the daughter of the late George Fuller and her stepmother Frances Fuller. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Collins, a son, David Wayne Powell a brother Edward Fuller and one grandchild Kimberly Powell. She was a loving mother and grandmother that enjoyed life to the fullest despite many handicaps. She enjoyed cooking, cleaning, dancing, laughing and singing and kept everyone smiling in her presence. She was employed by Carlisle Glass Company in Baltimore for over 25 years. She then worked at Fitzgerald Underwear after moving to Georgia. She was a member of Ty Ty United Methodist Church. She loved John Wayne and enjoyed listening to the old country songs of Jim Reeves, Ray Price, Johnny Cash and similar artists. She loved watching the Atlanta Braves and old western movies. Her dog Cody and kitty Lacey were her constant companions. She is survived by her children Edward (Ed) Powell (Cathy) of Westminster, MD; Alvin Powell (Delois Oates) of Ty Ty, GA; Catherine Tripp (Mike Hall) of Tifton, GA; Christine Kelley (Dr. William Terry Kelley) of Waynesville, NC; Diane Singletary (William) of Poulan, GA; Joseph Powell (Cindy) of Glen Burnie, MD; and Darlene Reeves of Tifton, GA; her grandchildren Mike Powell of Hampstead, MD; David and Adam Powell of Westminster MD; Robert Powell of Hancock, MD; Peggy Hensley of Hanover, PA; Jason Dayhoff of Gettysburg, PA; Richard Long of Tifton, GA; Christopher and Shane Singletary of Poulan, GA; Heather, Mary and Joseph Powell of Glen Burnie, MD; Jason Trice of Hurlock, MD; Ty and Amber Cummings and Brianna Reeves of Tifton, GA: a step grandsoun Michael Purvis of Leesburg, GA, 17 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister Laverne (Jim) Hagin of Traveras, FL; and three brothers, George (Irene) Fuller of Pasaadena, MD; Glenn (Darlene) Fuller of Glen Burnie, MD; and Gary (Luann) Fuller of Cambridge, MD as well as many nieces and nephews. Friends may call on the family at 803 Scott Circle in Glen Burnie, MD. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 7 to 9pm at Stallings Funeral home in Pasadena, MD. Services will be held at 10 am Wednesday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gail Button officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Brooklyn, MD. Pallbearers will be Michael Powell, David Powell, Adam Powell, Robert Powell, Richard Long, Christopher Singletary, Shane Singletary and Joseph Powell. Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Trice and Ty Cummings. Flowers are welcome or donations can be made to the Ronald McDonald House, Gideons International (P.O.
