Winona Norman Powell, 100, of Tifton passed away Thursday, April 30, 2015, at Maple Court Assisted Living in Tifton. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2015, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with Rev. Jay Roberson officiating. Mrs. Powell will be laid to rest at Leila United Methodist Church Cemetery in Omega. The family will receive friends Friday, May 1, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Mrs. Powell’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Powell was born July 12, 1914 in Norman Park, the daughter, of James Norman and Lossie Maxwell Norman, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Glen Powell; one son, Ben Powell; and four brothers. She was the first May Queen of Norman Park. She was a principal at Ty Ty School and taught English in Tift County for 35 years. After she retired from the public school system, she was asked to tutor Japanese students in English at ABAC. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading, playing bridge and teaching and playing the piano and, even at 100, she still sat down at the piano and played. She also enjoyed bingo and listening to singers and musicians. She was a member of Tifton’s First United Methodist Church, where she played piano for the Senior Group for many years. She was also an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Powell is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Sarah Powell of Tifton and Charlie and Carol Powell of Tallahassee, Florida; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glennis and Ed Sykes of Cumming and Lyn and Phil McKenzie of Atlanta; a daughter-in-law, Ann Powell of California, Maryland; a sister, Ann White of Rome; ten grandchildren, Sam McKenzie, Jim McKenzie, Rick Powell, Brian Petsch, John Paul Petsch, Meredith Sykes, Adrienne Powell, Christa Weathers, Daniel Powell and Jennifer Barker; three great-grandchildren, Heather Hutto, Ellison McCarthy and Will McCarthy; and two great-great grandchildren, Luke Hutto and Lane Hutto; and her special care-givers, Francis Hunt and Sharhonda Sears. Flowers will be accepted or memorial gifts may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, SW GA Regional Office, 225 East 2nd Street, Tifton, GA 31794, in loving memory of our mother, Winona Powell, a resident of Maple Court for many years; or the First United Methodist Church of Tifton, 107 12th Street West, Tifton, GA 31794.
