TIFTON – Josephine Swails Chaney, 81, a resident of Golden Living Center in Tifton, died Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Tift Regional Medical Center. A graveside funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014, at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Rev. Randall Gay will officiate with burial to follow. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 4, 2014, from 2:00 p.m. until the hour of the service at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Mrs. Chaney was born on November 2, 1932 in Douglas and was the daughter of Lee Swails and Betty Merritt Swails Smith, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Chaney; and 21 brothers and sisters. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Chaney is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, John Allen and Jackie Chaney of San Diego, California and Johnny Max Swails of North Carolina; two daughters and one son-in-law, Betty and Tommy Griffin of Tifton and Ann Chaney of Thornville, Ohio; five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Drucilla Knowlton of Waycross, Jean Lathan of Waycross, Carolyn and Buddy Ricketson of Broxton, Eloise and Earl Wooley of Destin, Florida and Virginia McNeal of Waycross; eight grandchildren, Leila Crutchfield, Dana Dixon, Linc Griffin, Penny Himes, Jon Chaney, Kimberly Fields, Johnny Max Swails Jr. and Dylan Knight Swails; and six great-grandchildren, Parker Crutchfield, Danielle Dixon, Katy Rose Griffin, Drue Dixon, Stone Austin and Taylor Harris. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of Golden Living Center, who Mrs. Chaney loved as her family and the staff loved her as well. She considered Golden Living Center her “home”.
